what is GYTA53 Outdoor armored Fiber Optical Cable

GYTA53 is a double-armored outdoor fiber optic cable designed for demanding environments such as direct burial or duct installation. Its construction features a central metal reinforcement core (steel wire) around which loose tubes (containing 250μm fibers and waterproof compound) and filler cords are twisted, with all interstices filled for complete water blocking. This core is then wrapped with a plastic-coated aluminum tape (APL) moisture barrier, followed by an extruded polyethylene inner sheath, a double-sided plastic-coated steel tape (PSP) armor, and an outer polyethylene sheath. This layered design, compliant with YD/T901-2009 and IEC60794-1. provides exceptional mechanical strength, temperature resistance, UV protection, and multiple waterproofing measures-including the steel core, gel-filled tubes, core filling, APL barrier, and water-blocking materials-making the cable highly resistant to pressure, longitudinal water ingress, and external damage.

Product Structure & Composition

In the GYTA53 optical cable, the center consists of a metal strength member. Around this strength member, loose tubes containing optical fibers and filled with water-blocking compound are stranded together, while the core gaps are filled with water-blocking material and wrapped with water-blocking tape. Then, a polyethylene inner jacket is extruded over the cable core. Over the inner jacket, a double-sided plastic-coated steel tape (labeled as "Coated Steel Tape" in the diagram) is longitudinally wrapped, followed by the outermost extruded polyethylene outer jacket. The outer jacket surface is provided with color stripes for identification. This construction offers excellent mechanical protection and multi-layer water resistance, making it suitable for direct burial or duct installation.

 Watertight Design

To ensure the cable is fully watertight, multiple measures are taken: a single Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) central strength member (non-metallic, offering both strength and insulation), loose tube filling compound, 100% cable core filling, PSP (double-sided plastic-coated steel tape) for enhanced moisture-proofing, and additional water-blocking material that prevents longitudinal water migration.

Engineering Applications  GYTA53 armor fiber cable

1. Direct Burial

The double-armored structure of GYTA53 provides excellent crush resistance and rodent protection, allowing direct burial along highways, riverbeds, or rocky terrain without additional conduit.

2. Mechanical ProtectionExcellent: Dual metal layers (APL + PSP) plus double PE sheaths provide high crush resistance, impact protection, and rodent/termite resistanceGood: Single steel tape offers solid crush resistance and rodent protection, suitable for most direct burial conditionsModerate: Aluminum tape is softer than steel; offers basic protection for duct or aerial (with messenger) but limited against crushing or rodent attack
3. Waterproof PerformanceSuperior: Multi-layer water blocking (tube compound + core filling + water-blocking tape + APL radial barrier + PSP coating + double sheaths) prevents both longitudinal and radial moisture ingressGood: PSP provides radial moisture protection; core filling and water-blocking tape handle longitudinal sealing; no redundant APL layerGood: APL provides effective radial moisture barrier; core water-blocking ensures longitudinal sealing; single PE jacket is sufficient for duct or aerial use
4. Crush & Impact ResistanceVery high: Double armor (APL + PSP) makes it ideal for rocky direct burial, high-traffic areas, and severe mechanical stress environmentsHigh: Single steel tape withstands typical direct burial and rodent attacks, but less than GYTA53 under extreme pressureLow to moderate: Aluminum tape offers little crush resistance; not suitable for direct burial where heavy loads or rocks are present
5. Typical ApplicationsDirect burial (highway, riverbed, rocky terrain), severe rodent/termite areas, duct with high mechanical demand, short-span aerialRegular direct burial, duct, aerial (with messenger), general rodent protectionDuct, aerial (with messenger or self-supporting with additional strength members), indoor-outdoor transition; not for direct burial
6. Installation FlexibilityStiffer: Requires larger bending radius (≥20D), more effort for stripping and jointingModerate: Bending radius typically 10D-15D, easier than GYTA53Most flexible: Smaller bending radius (10D), lighter and easier to handle
7. Relative CostHighest: More materials and complex manufacturing, about 20-30% higher than GYTSMedium: Industry standard, best value for direct burialLowest: Simple construction, least expensive among the three

GYTA53 armor fiber cable  Selection Guide

GYTA53 Installation Guide

1. Direct Burial

- Trench depth: typically at least 0.8 m (adjust for frost line and soil conditions).

- Bottom of trench: level and covered with fine soil or sand to prevent rocks from contacting the cable.

- After laying the cable, cover with at least 10 cm of fine soil/sand, place a warning tape, then backfill and compact.

2. Duct Installation

- Inspect duct inner wall for smoothness and sharp edges; use lubricant if necessary.

- Pulling force must be applied to the cable"s strength member or a dedicated pulling grip; max tension ≤ 6000 N.

- Bending radius: not less than 20× cable outer diameter to avoid damaging the steel tape.

3. Aerial (with Messenger Wire)

- Always use a steel messenger wire to bear the load; suspend the cable using hangers below the messenger.

- Hanger spacing: approximately 40 - 50 cm; add protective tubes at crossings or corners.

- Leave sufficient sag to avoid excessive tension on the cable.

General Reminders

- Avoid crushing, sharp impacts, or scratching the outer sheath during handling.

- Ensure splice closures are watertight; ground the armor if required.

- Inspect the cable and end caps before installation to prevent water ingress.

Frequently Asked Questions & Quick Inquiry

GYTA53 armor fiber cable  FAQ

What is GYTA53 fiber optic cable?

GYTA53 fiber optic cable is an outdoor armored fiber cable designed for harsh environments and direct buried installation. It typically uses a stranded loose tube structure, double PE sheath, and metal armor layers to protect the optical fibers from moisture, pressure, and mechanical damage.

What is GYTA53 fiber optic cable used for?

GYTA53 fiber optic cable is mainly used for outdoor communication networks, long-distance transmission, local trunk lines, CATV systems, and underground fiber optic projects. It is especially suitable for direct burial, ducts, and areas where strong crush resistance or rodent protection is required.

Is GYTA53 cable suitable for direct burial?

Yes. GYTA53 is commonly used as a direct buried fiber optic cable because its double sheath and armored structure provide excellent mechanical protection. The steel tape and aluminum tape armor help the cable withstand soil pressure, external impact, and rodent attacks without requiring extra conduit in many applications.

What is the structure of GYTA53 fiber optic cable?

A typical GYTA53 fiber optic cable contains optical fibers placed inside gel-filled loose tubes, which are stranded around a central strength member. The cable core is protected by water-blocking material, aluminum tape, an inner PE sheath, corrugated steel tape armor, and an outer PE sheath.

What is the difference between GYTA53 and GYTS fiber optic cable?

The main difference is the protection level. GYTS usually has a single PE sheath and steel tape armor, making it suitable for duct or general outdoor installation. GYTA53 has double sheath and double armor, so it offers higher crush resistance, better moisture protection, and stronger anti-rodent performance for direct buried applications.

How long does GYTA53 fiber optic cable last?

When installed correctly, GYTA53 fiber optic cable can provide stable service for many years in outdoor underground environments. Its service life depends on installation depth, soil condition, bending radius, tensile load, waterproof treatment, and compliance with local engineering standards.
